What is a TBI?
A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an injury that can change the way your brain normally works and is caused by an external force to the head. The severity of TBI may range from "mild" (i.e., a brief change in mental status or consciousness) to “severe" (i.e., an extended period of unconsciousness or amnesia after an injury). Mild traumatic brain injury (mild TBI) accounts for nearly 75 percent of all TBI's.
Traumatic Brain Injury Services
SCRS-IL TBI Services provide the following five core services, all services are provided directly or by arrangement, in a coordinated service model.
In-Home-Support-Services
include IHSS registration of services. Application Assistance. Personal Care Attendant Registry Services, list of available pre-screened Personal Care Attendants.
Community Reintegration Services:
services designed to develop, maintain, increase, or maximize independent functioning with the goal of living in the community and participating in community life. These services may include but are not limited to, assisting with access to housing resources, transportation resources, medical care referral services, rehabilitative therapy referral services, chemical dependency recovery program referral services, and education..
Vocational supportive services:
vocational rehabilitation referral services, enrollment support, and related services that may include prevocational and educational services to individuals who are unserved or underserved by existing vocational rehabilitation services.

Assistance in identifying, accessing, utilizing, and coordinating all services needed by; individuals with traumatic brain injury and their families.
Public and Professional Education:
designed to facilitate early identification of persons with brain injury, prompt referral for appropriate immediate services, and improvement of the system of services available.

Groups at Risk for TBI
SCRS-IL TBI Services provide the following five core services, all services are provided directly or by arrangement, in a coordinated service model.

While a TBI can happen to anyone, males and youngest and oldest Americans are at greatest risk .

Males - in every age group, TBI rates are higher for males - males aged 0-4 years have the highest rates of TBI-related ED visits.

Young children (aged 0-4 years) - Rates of ED visits were highest for children aged 0-4 years.

Teens and young adults - teens and young adults have the highest rates of motor-vehicle-related TBIs - Approximately 71% of sports and recreation-related TBI ED visits are among persons aged 10-19 years.

older adults - adults aged 75 years and older have the highest rates of TBI-related hospitalization and death.

Among older adults, rates of fall-related TBI hospitalization increase with age, with the rate of for persons aged 85 and older more than twice that of persons aged 75-84 years and six times that of persons aged 65-74 years.
